Is‌ ‌Fermented‌ ‌Skincare‌ ‌the‌ ‌Future‌ ‌of‌ ‌Skincare?‌ ‌

Most of us are aware of the health benefits of fermented foods such as kimchi, kombucha and sauerkraut. Wines (fermented grapes) have greater overall antioxidant capacity than grape juices. Why are fermented substances better? What exactly does “fermentation” mean?

What is Fermentation?

Fermentation is a process that’s been around for thousands of years. The process of fermentation allows the bacteria and yeast to feed on the sugar and starch, enhancing the nutritional value of the ingredients, generating smaller molecules and byproducts such as amino acids, nutrients, minerals and lactic acid. Though fermentation has a long history in the food industry, it’s recently begun to gain more traction in the beauty industry because of its proven skincare benefits and promising results based on numerous studies.

Why is Fermentation Good for the Skin?

The fermentation process is extra beneficial for skin because it breaks down formulas and compounds into smaller particles. This helps to amplify the absorption of ingredients into the skin at a much deeper, more concentrated level. Fermented ingredients in skincare deliver a potent dose of probiotics (aka healthy bacteria), lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, amino acids, and peptides. Fermentation increases the nutrient density, making a product’s natural ingredients much more powerful.  With various scientific studies, it has been shown that fermented skincare products are much more potent in comparison to their non-fermented counterparts.

Thanks to antimicrobial organisms, Fermentation also helps to prolong a product’s shelf life. This creates no need to add any synthetic preservatives or harmful parabens.

The fermented skincare concept is not new. There are a handful of well-known beauty brands who have created stellar products with fermented ingredients like fermented yeast blend that works to balance the skin’s pH, inspired by the extraordinarily youthful-looking hands of Japanese sake brewers, Japanese fermented Green Tea, Rice, and Algae, fermented sea kelp with skin healing power, etc.
